Common Pet Diseases in Kenya and How to Prevent Them

By Dr. James Mwangi, DVM  Β·  Westlands Paws Veterinary Clinic, Nairobi

Common pet diseases Kenya Nairobi vet

Kenya's climate and urban environment create specific health risks for dogs and cats that differ from colder countries. At Westlands Paws, our vets in Nairobi treat hundreds of preventable conditions each month β€” conditions that in most cases could have been avoided with the right knowledge and basic preventive care.

Most Common Dog Diseases in Kenya

1. Parvovirus

Canine Parvovirus is one of the leading causes of death in unvaccinated puppies across Kenya. It spreads through contact with infected faeces β€” which can survive in soil for over a year in Kenya's conditions. Symptoms include severe vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, lethargy, and rapid dehydration. Without emergency treatment, it is often fatal within 48–72 hours. Prevention: DHPP vaccination starting at 8 weeks. See our vaccination service β†’

2. Distemper

A highly contagious viral disease affecting the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. Signs include nasal discharge, coughing, and seizures. Spread through airborne droplets, almost always fatal in unvaccinated dogs. Prevention: DHPP vaccination.

3. Rabies

Rabies remains a significant public health concern in Kenya. Transmitted through bites from infected animals. Once clinical signs appear, it is 100% fatal in both animals and humans. Prevention: Annual Rabies vaccination β€” legally required in Kenya.

4. Tick Fever (Ehrlichiosis / Babesiosis)

Tick-borne diseases are extremely common in Nairobi. Babesiosis destroys red blood cells causing severe anaemia. Ehrlichiosis causes bleeding disorders and can be fatal if untreated. Dogs that go outdoors in Westlands or Lavington gardens are at risk. Prevention: Monthly tick prevention treatment + daily tick checks.

5. Kennel Cough

A highly contagious respiratory disease spreading rapidly wherever dogs gather. Symptoms include a harsh honking cough. Rarely fatal in healthy adults but severe in puppies, elderly dogs, or immunocompromised animals. Prevention: Bordetella vaccination β€” especially for dogs attending daycare or boarding in Nairobi.

Most Common Cat Diseases in Kenya

1. Cat Flu (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis + Calicivirus)

Extremely prevalent in Kenya, affecting even indoor cats. Symptoms include sneezing, nasal discharge, and eye inflammation. Kittens can die from secondary pneumonia. Many cats become lifelong carriers after recovery. Prevention: FVRCP vaccination.

2. Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper)

A devastating viral disease attacking rapidly dividing cells β€” intestines and bone marrow. Mortality rates exceed 90% in unvaccinated kittens. The virus survives in Nairobi's environment for over a year. Prevention: FVRCP vaccination.

3. Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV)

FeLV suppresses the immune system and is a leading cause of cancer in cats worldwide. Spreads through saliva, mutual grooming, and shared food bowls. Outdoor cats and those in multi-cat households are at highest risk. Prevention: FeLV vaccination + testing before introducing a new cat.

The Simplest Prevention: Vaccination + Parasite Control

The vast majority of diseases described above are entirely preventable. A proper vaccination schedule combined with monthly parasite prevention β€” flea, tick, and deworming β€” will protect your pet from almost all of the major killers we see at our Westlands Nairobi clinic.
